Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has spoken against the gambling advertisements and urged the government to take action. The sub-continent nation has banned real-money online games under the new Online Gaming Bill 2025.
A parliamentary inquiry launched in Australia to look into the issue of gambling made 31 recommendations and called it a growing health problem.
It proposed setting up a gambling regulator and a ban on gambling advertisements. Khawaja has said he will take his concern to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “We have a responsibility towards the young generation. When I watch NRL matches, I see gambling before the contests,” Khawaja said on the ABC’s podcast.
He mentioned that youngsters now see betting as part of watching games. “Kids have betting accounts, and they feel that they have to place bets to enjoy sports. We are putting gambling in front of the kids without telling them about the consequences,” he added.
Khawaja wants to ban gambling ads and thinks it would be a significant step in Australia.
“I would love to see little gambling ads during matches. Everyone will have to come together to make sure the young generation remains away from gambling,” he concluded.
