Overview:
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the innings as he took a dig at head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He mentioned that since Easwaran has amassed a hundred in T20 cricket, he will play Test cricket.
Abhimanyu Easwaran has been among the top run-getters in the Ranji Trophy, but the player has failed to be part of the playing XI for reasons best known to head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. In 109 first-class matches, he has scored 8136 runs at an average of 47.85. He has been a part of the Test squad on several occasions, but the decision-makers have benched him.
Easwaran, 30, hasn’t competed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is not a big name in the white-ball format. Many believe that this has impacted him, as the management prefers white-ball performers for the Test team. However, Easwaran has shown the ability to give his best in the shortest format, scoring 130 runs off 66 balls against Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His knock was not enough to lead Bengal to a win, but the experts have taken notice of his talent in white-ball cricket.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the innings as he took a dig at head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He mentioned that since Easwaran has amassed a hundred in T20 cricket, he will play Test cricket.
“Abhimanyu Easwaran has hit a hundred in T20 cricket. Now we can see him for sure. He has now performed in T20 cricket; we will see him in the Test team now,” Ashwin said.
Despite Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bidding adieu to Test cricket, Easwaran didn’t make it to the Playing XI against England. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair were preferred over him. However, Easwaran hasn’t been able to set the stage on fire whenever he has played for India A.
He spoke about not getting a chance in the Playing XI. “It hurts. You train and give your best in the middle. But, I have a solid support system with my family, friends and coach backing me. They motivate me, and I am in a good space,” he had told Revsportz in October.
