He has hit smashed three tons in the last five matches in the shortest format of the game. Samson is the first batter in the history of T20I cricket to hit three tons in a calander year.
He faced 51 balls, hitting 6 fours and eight sixes in his sensational batting display against the Proteas.
In last match of the previous series against Bangladesh, Samson managed 111 runs off 47 deliveries, packed with 11 fours and eight sixes. He was named the Player of the Match for his innings. The next assignment was against the Aiden Markram-led side and the right-handed batter started the series with a bang.
He took 50 balls to post 107 runs in Durban. Samson hit ten sixes and seven fours and was adjudged the Best of the Match. He was promoted as an opener by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir in the series against The Tigers. He justified the move.
Samson was given a chance as Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal missed the series due to Test matches against New Zealand. The two were unavailable for the series against South Africa as well.
