MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir do not enjoy the best of relationships in the world. Gambhir has expressed his reservations about the former Indian captain a few times. He has again made his opinion clear on the 38 years old wicket-keeper batsman. Gambhir said Dhoni shouldn’t “pick and choose” series.

“I have always maintained this one thing. Retirement is an individual call, I think for me selectors should talk to him (MS Dhoni) and ask him about his future plan. Ultimately for me, playing for India, you should not be picking and choosing series,” Gambhir said.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s unavailability since the 2019 Cricket World Cup has been a talking point in Indian cricket. It is considered by many people that he is not going to play for India much in the future and is just waiting for the home ODI series against West Indies, after which he will say goodbye to international cricket. With MS Dhoni, never say never, so you never know what he may come up with.

He had not played a farewell Test and instead announced retirement mid-way in 2014 Test series against Australia. Given the kind of individual he is, it looks unlikely that he will be featuring in a farewell series.

There is also a school of thought that he is going to help the team transition a new wicket-keeper in limited-overs cricket. And will call it quit the moment India find a reliable gloveman, which Pant hasn’t been, thus far, in white-ball cricket.
