In a do-or-die match for England, the Three Lions beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets to advance to the semi-finals. With the win, defending champions Australia got knocked out of the tournament.
Batting first, Sri Lanka started brightly and star opener Pathum Nissanka scored 67(45). However, in the last 10 overs of the innings, Sri Lanka lost 6 wickets for just 50 runs and were restricted to 141/8 after 20 overs.
In reply, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales provided a similar start and smashed the highest powerplay score in this edition (70). However, similar to how Sri Lanka lost wickets in last 10 overs, the Three Lions also kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.
Sri Lankan spinners turned the fate of the match and brought it to the last over. However, Stokes’ unbeaten 42 off 36 balls sealed the deal for his side.
After the completion of group A matches, England finished 2nd on the table and will face the table toppers from group B on November 10 at the Adelaide Oval.
