Shubman Gill continues to impress with his magnificent batting across formats in international cricket. He has raced ahead of his U-19 Indian team captain, Prithvi Shaw. The Mumbai batter led India to success in the U-19 World Cup in 2018 and played his maiden Test in the same year.
However, he has failed to get going and is out of the national team. His behavioral issues, inconsistent performance, and technical flaws have impacted his career. He was recently dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill is India’s vice-captain in white-ball formats and a regular member of the Test team.
Simon Doull, who was part of the 2018 U19 WC commentary team, discussed the careers of the two young Indian batters.
“Shubman Gill can change the flow of the game. When I first saw him at the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand, there was a lot of chat going on about Prithvi Shaw,” Doull said on JioCinema.
He made a statement during that time that Gill would surpass Shaw.
“I made a bold statement that Shubman Gill would have a better career than Prithvi Shaw because there were some technical flaws in Prithvi’s batting, and Gill looked flawless with the bat,” he added.
The former New Zealand cricketer was impressed with Gill’s 90-run innings in the first essay of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai.
“When I spoke to him, he wanted to score runs, big hundreds, and that was the hunger of the young man. I think he just loves Test cricket. The white-ball cricket means a lot to him, but he wants to score runs in red-ball cricket as well. H wants big runs in this format of the game.”
He further mentioned that Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant are the future of India’s batting.
“Jaiswal, Gill, and Pant are the future of India’s batting. They have big roles to play in the future.”
