MS Dhoni has played an important role in Chennai Super Kings' success.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a household name in the Indian Premier League. Over the years, he has played an important role in Chennai Super Kings’ success. The legendary batsman has led CSK to not just one but three elusive IPL titles.

One of the best finishers in the cricketing fraternity, Dhoni is best known for his impeccable batting skills and intelligence on the field. Under his leadership, CSK have become one of the most successful franchises in IPL.

In his glorious IPL career, Dhoni has played 204 matches so far and notched up 4632 runs at an average of more than 40, including 23 fifties.

On that note, let’s take a look at the most memorable knocks of MS Dhoni in IPL.

1. 54* vs Kings XI Punjab in 2010

This was probably one of the best innings played by MS Dhoni in his early phase of IPL. In the must-win clash against Kumar Sangakkara-led Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), the CSK skipper went on to play a captain’s knock and slammed 54 runs off just 29 balls to take his side over the line.

Dhoni’s unbeaten knock led CSK to a memorable knock in Dharamshala.

With 16 required off the last over, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman took just four deliveries to wrap up the chase as he hit Irfan Pathan for two huge sixes.

2. 70 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011

Every time the Yellow Army has faltered in the cash-rich league, Dhoni has come to the rescue of his side. There are numerous instances in the history of IPL when Mahi has fought a lone battle for CSK and a similar thing happened in 2011.

Chennai Super Kings were up against Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. As usual, the expectations were quite high from Dhoni’s team but CSK batsmen crumbled under pressure.

When the three-time champions were reeling at 22/4, Dhoni came out to bat and somehow steadied the ship for his team. He smashed 3 boundaries and 6 sixes during his knock of 40-ball 70 runs.

However, Dhoni’s effort went in vain as Kohli’s men won the match by 8 wickets.

3. 51 vs Mumbai Indians in 2013

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are known for their rivalry in the cash-rich league. The two teams have been involved in some of the most thrilling encounters in IPL.

In the fifth match of IPL 2013, CSK bowlers restricted Rohit Sharma-led side to a paltry 148.

However, the batting line-up of Chennai Super Kings once again fell short of expectations. They lost 5 wickets for just 66 runs. It was Dhoni who kept his side in the hunt till the last over.

The 39-year-old had slammed 51 runs off 26 balls before losing his wicket to Munaf Patel.

Eventually, the Mumbai-based franchise got the better off CSK as they won the game by 9 runs.

4. 70* vs Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018

The former India skipper, Dhoni, has played several match-winning innings for CSK but one which clearly stands out is his 70-run knock against RCB at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2018.

Chasing a monumental target of 206, Chennai were 74 for 4 at one stage. But Dhoni has some other plans as he took the RCB bowlers to the cleaners.

‘Thala’ played an unbeaten knock of 70 runs off 34 balls which was laced with seven sixes and a solitary boundary. Dhoni also forged a 101-run partnership with Ambati Rayudu to help CSK win by five wickets.

5. 75* vs Rajasthan Royals in 2019

The 12th match of IPL 2019 witnessed yet another batting collapse of CSK. But this time, Dhoni’s performance turned the tables for the ‘Super Kings’ as they ended up winning the game.

Batting first against the Rajasthan Royals, CSK openers Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson were dismissed early at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

When MS Dhoni came out to bat, the home team was had scored just 27 for the loss of three wickets in the powerplay overs. However, Mahi played a stunning knock under pressure. He scored 75 not out off 46 balls on a sluggish pitch.

The Ranchi-born batsman also slammed a hat-trick of sixes against RR’s most expensive bowler, Jaydev Unadkat, in the 20th over.

With the help of MS Dhoni, CSK won the match against RR by 8 runs.
