Format of the T20 World Cup 2026
The ICC has decided to expand the shortest format of cricket and is now giving more opportunities to non-full member teams to compete on the global stage. In earlier editions, all full member nations participated, along with two to four associate teams depending on the format. However, things are different this time. In the upcoming edition, a total of 20 teams will take part in the tournament, divided into four groups of five teams each.
All five teams in every group will play against each other once in the group stage. After that, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 round. In the Super 8 stage, the eight qualified teams will be divided into two groups of four. Each team will again play the others in its group once. The top two teams from both Super 8 groups will then advance to the semi-finals, followed by the final to decide the champion.
Even before the start of the World Cup, the tournament has seen several discussions and controversies. One key point to note is that Pakistan will not travel to India due to diplomatic reasons, so all of Pakistan’s matches will be played in Sri Lanka. If Pakistan qualifies for the final, that match will also be held there. Additionally, the Super 8 group allocations will be based on pre-decided seeding rather than group stage points, ensuring that Pakistan can play all its Super 8 matches in Sri Lanka.

A total of 20 teams are participating in this edition of the T20 World Cup, and they have been divided into four different groups.

Venues
India and Sri Lanka are jointly hosting this mega event, with a total of eight venues selected to conduct the matches. Five venues have been shortlisted in India, while three venues have been finalised in Sri Lanka.
India
1) Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
The freshly renovated Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, previously known as Motera Stadium, is set to host matches in the T20 World Cup 2026. It is currently the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of around 132,000 spectators. The venue is scheduled to host seven matches in this World Cup, including the final.
This will be the first time the stadium hosts matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, it has a long history of staging major ICC events in the ODI format. The ground has hosted matches in multiple editions of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, including 1987, 1996, 2011, and 2023. Notably, it was also the venue for the 2023 World Cup final.
2) M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
The second venue in India is the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With a seating capacity of around 39,000 spectators, the stadium will host a total of seven matches in the tournament.
The stadium has previously hosted matches in both the ICC Men’s and Women’s Cricket World Cups. However, this will be the first time it is hosting matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
3) Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi
The third venue in India is Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With a seating capacity of around 55,000, the ground is scheduled to host six matches in this edition of the tournament.
Arun Jaitley Stadium has historically been a regular host of major ICC events in India. Previously, it hosted four matches during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016, including one semifinal, underlining its importance as a big match venue in ICC competitions.
4) Eden Garden, Kolkata
Fourth on the list is the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With a seating capacity of around 68,000 spectators, the stadium will host seven matches, including one semifinal. It is one of the most historic cricket grounds in India and has hosted almost every major ICC event held in the country.
5) Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
The final stadium on the list is the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With a seating capacity of 33,108, it will host eight matches in the tournament, including one semifinal.
Wankhede is one of India’s most historic cricket grounds. It has hosted several major international matches over the years and holds a special place in cricket history as the venue where India lifted the World Cup in 2011 after a 28-year wait.
