The Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders in match number 15 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season at the Wankhede in Mumbai. CSK, who were asked to bat by Eoin Morgan, saw Ruturaj Gaikwad (63) and Faf du Plessis (95*) shine as they posted a mammoth 220/4 in 20 overs. 

The KKR pacers conceded runs aplenty with each of the four pacers conceding over 12 an over. CSK managed 82/0 in the first 10 overs before scoring 138 in the next 10. 

In reply, a four-wicket spell from Deepak Chahar rooted the Knights as they fumbled to be reeling at 32/5. However, things changed from there as Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik launched a counter attack. After their dismissals, Pat Cummins struck a valiant unbeaten fifty-plus score as KKR folded for 202 in the end.

CSK post these records after mammoth 220/3

The Super Kings amassed their highest total against KKR in the IPL. Their score of 220/3 is also the second-highest score against KKR by any side in the competition. Notably, this is also the 12th occasion where the Knights have gone on to conceded 200-plus runs in an innings in the cash-rush league. MS Dhoni-led CSK also posted their fifth-highest total in the IPL. They registered their 18th 200-plus score in the competition (second-highest).

Du Plessis surpasses Kallis

Veteran batsman Faf du Plessis (95*) smashed nine fours and four sixes in a valiant effort. He stayed till the end and helped CSK get the big total they needed. The star T20 player has now got to 2,466 runs at an average of 34.25.

Interestingly, Faf has surpassed former RCB and KKR star Jacques Kallis in terms of runs (2,427). The right-handed batsman struck his 17th IPL fifty besides also a maiden one versus KKR. He has scored 2,252 runs for CSK, registering his 15th fifty for them.

Record opening stand for Chennai against KKR

Faf and Gaikwad stitched a solid 115-run stand for the first wicket. Their heroic stand is now the highest opening partnership for CSK against KKR in the tournament. This was also the fourth time where CSK slammed a 100-plus partnership for any wicket against the Knight Riders.

Half-century wickets for Chahar

CSK pacer Deepak Chahar (4/29) now has eight scalps in IPL 2021 at just 13.75. The Indian bowler took his second four-wicket haul this season. Chahar has now gone past 50 wickets in the IPL (53). The former Rajasthan Royals pacer has also become just the sixth player for the Super Kings to go past 50 wickets (52). Since 2015, Chahar has taken 40 wickets in powerplay overs. This is the most by any bowler.

Russell’s heroics not enough

Big-hitting West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell slammed a 22-ball 54 for KKR. He smashed three fours and six sixes at an emphatic strike rate of 245.45. Russell has now surpassed the 1,600-run mark in IPL (1,616). The dashing all-rounder registered his ninth IPL fifty. He has also struck the second-fastest fifty this season in the IPL (21 balls). Russell notched his joint-second fastest fifty in the competition as well.

Unique record for Dhoni and KKR

MS Dhoni scored 17 from eight balls. Notably, MSD hit a boundary of Sunil Narine’s bowling. This is the first occasion where Dhoni has hit a boundary of Narine in the IPL. It took him 64 balls to get this four. Meanwhile, KKR saw 160 runs scored by Karthik, Russell and Cummins. This is now the most by a No. 6, 7, 8 combined for a team in an IPL innings.

Cummins gets these records

Cummins smashed an unbeaten 66 from 34 balls. He slammed four fours and six sixes. He hit Sam Curran for 30 runs in an over. By doing so, Cummins has become the eighth batsman to hit a bowler for 30-plus runs in a single over in the IPL. He has become just the third batsman to hit 4 or more sixes in an over in the IPL on two or more occasions.
