Chennai Super Kings had a rough Indian Premier League 2022 campaign.

Chennai Super Kings had a rough Indian Premier League 2022 campaign. After winning the 2021 edition and their fourth trophy in total, the expectations were huge once again. However, CSK perished rather sheepishly and failed to offer any substance. From a change of leadership midway to a string of defeats, CSK were outwitted in the competition. They finished 9th in the standings. Here we present the report card of CSK in IPL 2022.

League stage status and points

In the league stage, CSK finished second-last, having played 14 games. They collected four wins and suffered 10 losses. With 8 points and an NRR of -0.203, CSK were outplayed and never quite got going. CSK started the season with 4 straight defeats versus the likes of KKR, LSG, PBKS, and SRH. They broke the chain of defeats by overcoming but lost against GT next. A win followed over MI, and a defeat next was suffered versus Punjab. CSK beat SRH and DC, and in between these wins, they were overcome by RCB. They finished the season with 3 successive defeats against MI, GT, and RR.

CSK performance across powerplay, middle, and death overs

As per ESPNCricinfo, Ruturaj Gaikwad managed 186 runs for CSK in the PP overs. He averaged 23.25. With the ball, Mukesh Choudhary claimed the joint-most IPL scalps in PP overs (11). As a team, CSK managed 21 scalps in the first six overs. They also managed to score 630 runs in the PP overs.

In the overs between 7 and 15, Ambati Rayudu managed the most runs for CSK (227). With the ball, Moeen Ali claimed 8 scalps for his side. As a side, CSK plundered 1,161 runs which was the sixth-highest in the edition. With the ball, Chennai picked up 39 scalps in the middle overs, which was the fifth-highest.

At the death, Dwayne Bravo claimed 11 wickets for CSK, which was also the best number clocked among players. With the bat, MS Dhoni scored 153 runs which were the fifth-highest. As a team, CSK managed to take just 22 wickets at the death, which was the fewest. They scored 517 runs at the death (5th-highest).

Positives for CSK

As seen in the last few games, Devon Conway can form an able partnership with Gaikwad at the top. CSK can now build on these two taking over the reins. Together, the two promising players can tick CSK’s boxes correctly.

Mukesh Choudhary is a real talent for CSK, and the uncapped left-arm pacer found his mettle, ending up with 16 scalps from 13 games. The Sri Lankan duo of Maheesh Theekshana and 19-year-old Maheesha Pathirana are huge prospects, and one can see them contribute. Both left a positive impression.

Veterans MSD and Bravo have still left some oil in their tanks. They can be around for 1-2 more seasons. MSD did a reasonable job with the bat, and Bravo ended up with 16 scalps which was excellent.

Someone like Shivam Dube did well and needs to be lauded for his batting prowess.

What went missing?

Captaincy change in the middle of a campaign hurt CSK. With Jadeja misfiring and taking too much pressure. Dhoni was handed back his duties. This sent the wrong message as it looked at the gaping hole on offer after MSD decided to hang up his boots. With Jaddu failing, CSK lost a lot of offerings.

Several veterans now need to move on from this CSK set-up. Players like Ambati Rayudu played their last campaign, and someone like Uthappa, too, needs to be shipped out next. CSK need some energy and freshness.

The absence of Deepak Chahar was a big miss. His absence saw CSK stutter with the ball. Also, there were too many changes in the CSK line-up, and they never quite identified the clear side.

What can CSK do better?

CSK need to improve their bowling next season and also accelerate their innings. They often blew hot and cold. Jadeja will hope for a swift return, and Dube needs to be played frequently. They also need to search for able players in that middle order. Going for good uncapped names can work wonders. CSK need good bowlers also, and they will look at the auction next to sort things out. One will expect MSD to lead the side well next season.

Report card marks

Out of 10, CSK get a rating of 4 this season. Several players were disappointed in terms of performance, and the change of captaincy and the way things went muddled up hurt them. CSK were inconsistent, and that showed in their journey.
