The 2021 edition of the Premier League was postponed midway in May after players and staff were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the BCCI chalked out a schedule to see the remainder of the tournament be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
One can note that the 2020 edition of the IPL was also held in the UAE after COVID-19 jolted the sport. The IPL is set to start on September 19 with Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians locking horns. Notably, the grounds in UAE are relatively smaller in size and six-hitting can be a regular factor. The likes of Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai will play host to the eight teams.
Last season, the IPL in UAE was lit with boundaries. As many as 10 batters went on to smash 20-plus sixes in the season. Mumbai Indians’ Ishan Kishan topped the show with 30 sixes to his name. Sanju Samson (26), Hardik Pandya, Nicolas Pooran (25 each) weren’t far behind. Each of these batsmen had terrific strike rates as well to show how much they enjoyed themselves on the pitches in UAE.
Now coming to the 2021 edition, several batters will be aiming to gain a hold in terms of hitting sixes. There are several top-notch entertainers who can go on to get the job done for their respective teams. On the same note, we present the batters who can hit the most sixes in the remainder of the IPL 2021 season.
KL Rahul (Punjab Kings)
After seven IPL matches this season, Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul has registered the most maximums. The opening batsman has managed to smash a total of 16 sixes so far. Rahul has scored 331 runs this season at 66.20 at a strike rate of 136.21. Notably, Rahul had hit 23 sixes in the UAE last season to highlight his prowess. He had also mustered 670 runs at 55.83. Rahul can be backed to do the job and hit a plethora of sixes in the IPL 2021 remainder. Rahul has been IPL’s best batsman since 2018 and he is someone who can wreak havoc.
Faf du Plessis (Chennai Super Kings)
Faf du Plessis is inching towards complete fitness after being concussed during the Pakistan Super League in June. After a layoff, Faf is all set to return and make his presence felt for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021. In seven matches, Faf has already scored 320 runs at 95.00. He has been a consistent performer for the CSK earlier this season in India. Faf has hit 13 sixes this season and is tied with team-mate Ambati Rayudu for the same. Last season, Faf had managed to hit 14 sixes in 13 games in the UAE. He scored 449 runs at 40.81.
Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Kolkata Knight Riders’ senior player Andre Russell recently created history by smashing the fastest fifty in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He got to a fifty in just 14 balls. Russell highlighted his big-hitting skills, smashing sixes. In the IPL, Russell has managed to hit 13 sixes so far this season, scoring 163 runs for KKR. If he gets going, then Russell could be unstoppable. IPL 2020 was a forgettable tourney for the West Indian, who hit just nine sixes in total. But Russell has already looked much better this time around and the recent CPL blitz can see him make a difference.
Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians)
Kieron Pollard was superb for champions Mumbai Indians when they outclassed CSK by four wickets earlier this season in a 219-run target. Pollard hit a 34-ball 87*, sending the balls past the rope on a consistent basis. Like Russell, Pollard can take the game away in a flash as he powered himself by hitting eight sixes against CSK. This season, Pollard has already hit 13 sixes so far, at a strike rate of 155.23. He has 163 runs under his belt. In IPL 2020, Pollard smashed a total of 22 sixes in the UAE. The short boundaries will aid him once again as Pollard can go on to finish as the batter with the most maximums in IPL 2021.
Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals)
Samson has done a decent job for RR with the bat this season, scoring 277 runs at 46.16. He has smashed 26 fours and 11 sixes at a strike rate of 145.78. The RR skipper will have a lot of added responsibility since Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler won’t be available. Samson showed what he can do by managing to register the second-highest number of sixes in IPL 2020 (26). He had hit 375 runs last year and one expects him to better the figure. Samson can work highly for RR this season after his blitz last time around and he will be a genuine contender for the most sixes.
Other notable players in the mix: Moeen Ali (12 sixes), Prithvi Shaw (11 sixes), and Ambati Rayudu (13 sixes).
