Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by 38 runs in match number nine of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season on Sunday. After electing to bat first, RCB posted a staggering 204/4. Glenn Maxwell (78) and AB de Villiers (76*) scored sparkling fifty-plus scores to dent the KKR bowlers, who were forced to go awry with their length and line.
Maxwell was part of two glorious fifty-plus stands for the RCB, taking control of the tie in Chennai. He attacked almost every bowler and didn’t allow them to settle down. Meanwhile, ABD came in and looked positive from the start. He freed his arms once getting his eyes set and played some masterful strokes. The two batsmen were on song and made KKR pay for some ordinary bowling.
KKR needed a brisk start and someone who could stay till the end. However, nobody took that initiative as the side lost crucial wickets at regular intervals. Lack of partnerships and allowing RCB hit them hard, cost the side. This was a second successive loss for KKR and RCB gained two crucial points.
Here we highlight the key records that were set in the match.
Records for Maxwell and ABD
Maxwell went on to hit a sublime 78, racking up nine fours and three sixes. The Million Dollar Man smashed his second successive fifty in IPL 2021. Maxwell now has 176 runs in three games for RCB, and is the current Orange Cap holder.
The former Punjab and Delhi batsman now has 1,681 runs in the IPL at an average of 23.67. He struck his eighth IPL fifty. It was also a second fifty versus KKR as he registered his highest score as well against them. Maxwell surpassed 400 runs against Kolkata (417).
Veteran T20 specialist AB de Villiers hit a 34-ball 76*. The star batsman went on to smack nine fours and three sixes. AB de Villiers has amassed 4,974 runs in the IPL at an average of 40.77. Mr.360 hit his 39th IPL fifty, equaling the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, and Virat Kohli.
ABD hit his highest score against KKR, besides notching his fourth fifty against them. Interestingly, he became the seventh batsman in the competition’s history to get past 500 runs against the Knight Riders (511).
Records for RCB
RCB have notched the 10th-highest total against KKR in the IPL (204/4). This the third time they achieved a 200-plus score against KKR in the competition. RCB became the first team to amass 20 200-plus scores in the IPL. They have now beaten KKR for the fourth successive match in the IPL.
