The Royal Challengers Bangalore have risen to the top of the table in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season. The Virat Kohli-led RCB overcame Delhi Capitals in match number 22 by a solitary run. After being put into bat first, RCB went on to put up 171/5 in 20 overs. Veteran T20 stalwart AB de Villiers smashed a 42-ball 75*. The Delhi Capitals lost wickets at regular intervals before Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer added an unbeaten 78-run stand. But that wasn’t enough as RCB prevailed.

Earlier, RCB lost Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal off successive deliveries inside the powerplay overs (30/2). Glenn Maxwell tried to up the ante and couldn’t maximise on a start. Reeling at 60/3, RCB witnessed Rajat Patidar and ABD amassing a crucial 50-plus stand. ABD showed his mettle for RCB and powered them past 170. DC, who weren’t in the game, saw Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer lead a fight. The two batted well at the death but RCB held on.

Valiant ABD smashed 40th IPL fifty

AB De Villiers struck an unbeaten 75 to bring up his second fifty this season. The T20 legend hit three fours and five sixes at a staggering strike rate of 178.57. The Proteas star is now the seventh batsman to get past 200 runs in IPL 2021 (204). He has also got to 40 IPL fifties, becoming the fifth player to achieve this mark.

De Villiers goes on to impress with these feats

ABD has now scored 1,808 runs in the death overs (16-20) in the IPL at an average of 48.86. The veteran batsman is now the seventh-highest scorer against Delhi Capitals. He has scored 549 runs against DC at 61.00. This was his fifth fifty against his former side. Interestingly, he is just the 11th player to get past 500 runs against the Capitals.

5,000 IPL runs for De Villiers

Mr. 360 has now scripted a special record. The senior batsman has gone past 5,000 runs in the IPL. ABD now has 5,053 career IPL runs at 41.08. He is now the sixth batsman in IPL history to surpass 5,000 runs. Notably, he is also the second foreigner to achieve this tally after David Warner.

Fastest to 5,000 runs in terms of balls faced

De Villiers is now the fastest to 5,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. As per ESPNCricinfo, the Proteas ace achieved the mark, facing a total of 3,288 deliveries. He has now gone past David Warner’s tally, who had taken 3,554 balls.

Mishra vs Maxwell a delight

Amit Mishra got the better off Glenn Maxwell once again. The veteran leg-spinner (1/27) has now dismissed Maxwell five times in the IPL. Notably, Maxwell has managed to score 66 runs off 35 balls by Mishra. The veteran spinner has raced to 166 IPL scalps, four short of equalling record-holder Lasith Malinga, who owns 170 wickets. Mishra now has16 scalps against RCB, equalling the tally of Sunil Narine.

Feats for Hetmyer and Pant

Shimron Hetmyer scored a brilliant unbeaten 53. The southpaw brought up a fifty off just 23 balls. The DC batsman has brought up the joint-third fastest fifty in IPL 2021. He now has two IPL fifties under his belt. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant struck an unbeaten 58. This was his second fifty in IPL 2021. The southpaw now has 14 IPL fifties. Pant has become the second DC batsman to get past 180 runs in IPL 2021 (187).

Other notable stats in the match

IPL 2021 Purple Cap holder Harshal Patel claimed two scalps. The right-arm pacer has 17 wickets under his belt this season at 12.00. Mohammed Siraj (1/44) is now the top candidate in terms of dot balls this season (67). Virat Kohli is now the first batsman to get past 900 runs against DC in the IPL (909).
