India and Sri Lanka are set to face-off in a two-match Test series, starting March 4 in Mohali. The crucial series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle. The visitors are atop of the ICC World Test Championship standings, having played and won their lone Test series 2-0. They have a 100% PCT. Team India is placed fifth in the standings. The hosts played three Test series so far and have a PCT of 49.07.

India have a tremendous record on home soil in Tests and would want to extend their authority. They have the resources to hurt the Lankans. The visitors, led by Dimuth Karunaratne have a strong side on offer as well and they will fathom their chances on the sub-continent pitches. Over the course of the series, there are some key battles between players that can set the tone for the series.

On the same note, we look at the key player battles between the two teams.

Jasprit Bumrah vs Dimuth Karunaratne

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has enjoyed a lot of success away from home. He has hardly played Test cricket on home soil. Therefore, Bumrah will have a challenge in front of him in order to produce substance. Bumrah has 113 wickets at 22.85. He will be wanting to get the early wicket of Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. The southpaw has over 5,000-plus runs in the format at a sound average of 39.52. He is an excellent player and negotiates the best bowlers well.

R Ashwin vs Angelo Mathews

Senior Indian spinner R Ashwin is a match-winner and he will relish bowling in Mohali. Ash has claimed 16 wickets at this venue, having played three Tests. He also has 23 wickets in Bengaluru (venue for 2nd Test). Overall, he has 430 wickets under his belt in Tests. He will be targeting the key wicket of Angelo Mathews, who has plenty of experience in Lanka’s middle-order. Mathews is an excellent player of spin. He has 6,338 runs in Tests at 44.63. As per Cricmetric, Mathews has faced 335 deliveries bowled by Ashwin, scoring 177 runs. He has been dismissed four times.

D Chameera vs Rohit Sharma

Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera will want to showcase his mettle upfront with the new ball. Chameera, who has 32 scalps from 12 Tests, will target the key wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. The senior cricketer missed the last Test series between India and South Africa earlier this year. He has a key job ahead of him. Chameera will mix things up and try to keep Rohit guessing. Rohit has faced 22 deliveries bowled by Chameera, scoring 8 runs in Tests. He needs to set the tone for Team India. Rohit’s temperament will play a key role.

Lasith Embuldenya vs Virat Kohli

25-year-old Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldenya has started well in his Test career. He has claimed 62 wickets already in 13 matches at 33.30. He will be excited to bowl against Virat Kohli. The 33-year-old former Indian skipper has the tendency to be flat against spinners and often ends up giving his wicket away. Kohli, who is set to appear in his 100th and 101st Test matches respectively, will aim to end his century drought. His application against the SL spinners may prove to be crucial.

Ravindra Jadeja vs Kusal Mendis

Indian left-arm spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is making a return after injury woes of late. Jadeja will aim to show his worth once again and complement Ashwin in the spin department. The senior spinner will be highly essential in tying things up and bowling accurately. He also gets his overs done quickly. Jadeja will relish bowling against Mendis. The southpaw is one of SL’s leading batters. Notably, Mendis has scored 84 runs off 121 balls against Jadeja, being dismissed just once. He has hit 14 fours as well. This will be a relishing battle between the two plyers.
