Bangladesh have announced their squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which will be played in Australia from October 16 to November 13. Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be leading the team in the ICC event. The big news is that former captain Mahmudullah has not been picked in the squad for Australia. Sabbir Rahman, Litton Das, and Mosaddek Hossain are some of the key batters in the squad. In the bowling, they will depend on Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and, of course, skipper and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. Shoriful Islam, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, and Soumya Sarkar are the standby players in the squad.
Strengths: Shakib and Mustafizur
Skipper Shakib and left-arm seamer Mustafizur are Bangladesh’s biggest strengths in the team named for the T20 World Cup. Despite Bangladesh’s poor recent performances, Shakib continues to remain their talisman. He is a genuine match-winner with both bat and ball. The Bangladesh captain can also open the innings with the ball and bowl in the middle overs. With the bat, he is capable of playing match-winning knocks. He is a proven performer in both departments. If Shakib performs to potential, he can single-handedly win games for the team.
Like Shakib, Mustafizur, too, is a match-winner with the ball. He has amazing skills as a medium pacer and can outfox batters with the same. His slower deliveries are among the best in business. If Bangladesh are to do well in the T20 World Cup in Australia, Mustafizur will have to be at his best. He has blown hot and cold in a few games recently. And given how heavily the team relies on him, the left-arm seamer’s performance can make or break their campaign.
Weaknesses: Too inconsistent
It is not like Bangladesh do not have the talent. In fact, even in terms of experience, they have players who have been around the team for a few years. The list goes and on, be it Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Litton Das, Taskin Ahmed, or Ebadot Hossain. All of them have been around Bangladesh cricket for a few years now. However, their performances have not exactly been up to the mark.
This inconsistency is what has been hurting Bangladesh cricket time and again. They just haven’t been able to transform potential into performance. Earlier, it was said that they lacked experience. But that excuse cannot be given now, for they have been playing international cricket for many years. Unfortunately for Bangladesh, they have not developed their game to the extent that they should have. As a result, they still depend on the likes of Shakib and Mustafizur to win them matches.
Opportunities: To make an impact
Yes, the T20 World Cup is simply an opportunity for Bangladesh to make an impact. They have been very disappointing as a team in recent months. They lost both the T20I and ODI series in Zimbabwe and were very poor in the Asia Cup as well, losing to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh would be the first to admit that they are better than the results they have produced recently.
Threats: Lack of self-belief
One of the main reasons why Bangladesh have failed to deliver in recent times is due to the lack of self-belief. When they go into the ground, it doesn’t seem like they are in it to win it. They look like confused outfit. The issues with the captaincy in recent months haven’t helped their cause. There have been no performances they can fall back on later. Can Bangladesh find a way out of their mediocrity?
