The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the much-awaited owners of the two new Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Ventures Ltd won the bidding for the Lucknow franchise at a price of INR 7090 crore. Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) got the Ahmedabad franchise for INR 5625 crore. After the announcement of the two new franchises, the BCCI also confirmed that the IPL 2022 season will feature a total of ten teams. As many as 74 matches will be played and each side will play 7 home and 7 away matches. Following the announcement of the new teams, fans are wondering who the captains of the team could be. Here are five options for team Ahmedabad.
1. Ravindra Jadeja:
Being a Gujarat boy, Team India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is one of the front-runners to captain the Ahmedabad franchise. Over the years, Jadeja has been an indispensable part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise. This season as well, he played a key role in CSK’s title-winning campaign, contributing with the bat, ball and, as always, in the field. Jadeja is presently one of the biggest names in Indian cricket and will walk into any playing XI on the basis of his all-round skills. It really won’t be much of a surprise if you see him leading the Ahmedabad franchise in IPL 2022.
2. KL Rahul:
The Team India batter has had an amazing run with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) franchise as an opener. However, while he has been the team’s leading run-getter in the last two seasons, the franchise has failed to qualify for the playoffs. KL Rahul has even admitted that he wasn’t able to play his natural game freely since it would have ended up hurting the team’s chances. The Rahul-PBKS combo as captain-franchise did not work, so it is better for them to part ways. Rahul can lead a new franchise and start afresh as a leader. As for his batting ability, there isn’t any doubt about it.
3. Shreyas Iyer:
IPL 2021 was a strange season for Shreyas Iyer. He missed the first half due to injury and was replaced by rising star Rishabh Pant as Delhi Capitals (DC) captain. Following the break due to COVID, Iyer was fit for the second half of the IPL 2021 season. However, the DC management decided to continue with Pant as skipper for the second half as well. Iyer batted decently as a senior member of the team but could not contribute the big scores. However, he has proved his skills as a leader. It was under him that DC reached the final of the IPL for the first time in 2020. Surely, the new franchises would be keen to have Iyer in the fray as one of the captaincy options for them.
4. Yuzvendra Chahal:
This will be an interesting choice. Yuzvendra Chahal has been a key member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) outfit for the last decade. However, with the mega auction ahead, he might not be retained by the franchise. While Chahal hasn’t been close to being captain, he is a sharp thinker, which is evident in the way he traps his victims. He is also a former chess player, which is an indication of his intelligence. Could be an offbeat choice for captaincy.
5. Shikhar Dhawan:
He may be 35 but Shikhar Dhawan seems to be in a different rhythm as far as his white-ball batting is concerned. He may not have been picked for the T20 World Cup squad but the southpaw was in excellent form, particularly in the first half of the IPL. Dhawan captained India during the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year and gave a decent account of himself. Considering the experience that he brings along and the confidence in his batting, there is no reason why Dhawan cannot be a strong captaincy candidate.
