Mumbai Indians have a new star in the making, as 29-year-old seamer Akash Madhwal, who is playing in his debut IPL season, scripted history on Wednesday against LSG, as the right-arm quick took a five-wicket haul.
Akash’s 5/5, which are the joint-best figures in the history of IPL, helped MI beat LSG by 81 runs, which made Akash a household name. The 29-year-old has been trending on social media platforms, but who is Akash Madhwal?
Notably, Akash played just tennis ball cricket till the age of 24, and the credit for his rise must go to former India opener Wasim Jaffer, who spotted Madhwal during his stint with the Uttarakhand side in 2019.
After his impressive performance for the state, Madhwal was even named his state’s captain for the 2022/23 domestic season.
Interestingly, the right-arm seamer did his graduation in engineering, and the Uttarakhand-based cricketer was also the neighbour of Rishabh Pant. The two players from the north also share the same coach Avtar Singh.
Akash joined IPL in 2021 with RCB but failed to make his debut and went unsold in 2022. Further, he joined MI as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav in 2022. This season, Akash has played seven games and took 13 wickets.
