Former India captain Anjum Chopra doesn’t want foreign players to lead the Women’s Premier League franchises. She was disappointed that three teams went for the overseas players when it came to leading the side.
Gujarat Giants named Beth Mooney as their captain, while Alyssa Healy was bestowed with the responsibility of UP Warriorz. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals went with Meg Lanning.
Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore are the teams who have named Indian players as leaders. While Harmnapreet is the head of MI, Smriti Mandhana has the command of RCB in her hands.
“I didn’t like that most of the teams have overseas captains. It is an Indian league and will be played in Indian conditions, so the local players should have been given the captain’s armband,” she said.
The former player was not pleased that Deepti Sharma was overlooked by UP Warriorsz for the captaincy role.
“Deepti Sharma should have been made the captain as she was one of the skippers in the last Women’s T20 Challenge,” she said.
