Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto responded straightforwardly when asked about Shakib Al Hasan’s absence from the Champions Trophy. Shakib, who missed out on the multi-nation event after failing to clear his tests for a reported suspect bowling action, will not feature in this ICC event for the first time since his debut.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of Bangladesh’s opening game against India on February 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, a reporter asked Shanto if Shakib’s absence would impact the team. Shanto’s reply was simple and to the point: “No.”
Shakib’s last appearance in international cricket was during the Test series in India last year. He also missed his ‘farewell Test’ against South Africa in Mirpur, as political unrest in Bangladesh prevented his participation. Additionally, he was absent from the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Shanto, who accumulated 286 runs in ODIs last year at an impressive average of 71.50, expressed that Bangladesh is confident in their ability to challenge Rohit Sharma’s India.
“It’s crucial for us to perform at our best in all aspects—batting, bowling, and fielding. Looking at how we’ve played over the past few years in this format, I believe we have a strong team. The conditions are quite similar to what we’ve experienced, and I’m confident that we’ll prepare ourselves thoroughly. I’m hopeful for a positive outcome in tomorrow’s match,” Shanto said.
Bangladesh had reached the semi-finals in the previous Champions Trophy, where India defeated them at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Shakib had played a key role, scoring a century against New Zealand in Cardiff, helping Bangladesh secure a five-wicket victory. In the upcoming tournament, Bangladesh will face India, Pakistan, and New Zealand in their group.
