Senior Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja was unstoppable in the first Test versus Sri Lanka in Mohali. India, who won the Test by an innings and 222 runs, were indebted to Jadeja for his heroics with both bat and ball. The left-arm spinner of late has handed India the luxury of fielding five specialist bowlers, given his exploits with the bat in the lower middle-order. His left-arm spin complements R Ashwin superbly as the duo has spun a web when visiting teams land in India.

Team India’s massive success in Tests at home should be credited to the duo for match-winning spells time and time again. Jadeja had earlier missed the tour of South Africa with an injury. He also missed the West Indies tour of India (limited-overs). Now a fit Jadeja with so much experience just walked into the side and smashed several records against the Lankans. It was one of the best all-round shows in recent Test cricket history.

Here we present the massive feats Jadeja registered, besides his numbers and why he is the best in business.

Number one ranked all-rounder in Tests

In the latest ICC Test Rankings for All-rounders, Jadeja saw his name climb up the ladder. He is now the number one ranked player, getting past R Ashwin and Jason Holder. Jadeja has 406 rating points, with Holder, Ashwin, Shakib Al Hasan, and Ben Stokes completing the Top five. Not just that, Jadeja also climbed three places to be placed 17th in the Rankings for Bowlers in Tests. He also gained 17 places to be placed 37th among batters.

Jadeja’s Test numbers

In 59 Test matches, the senior Indian cricketer has piled up 2,396 runs at an average of 35.76. He has two hundreds and 17 fifties under his belt. He has two tons and 10 fifties on home soil. Jadeja has good numbers away from home, averaging 30.26 with seven fifties registered. With the ball, the prolific cricketer has taken 242 Test scalps at 24.44. In addition, he has 10 five-wicket hauls. Jadeja is the ninth-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests. 172 of his wickets have come at home.

Getting past Kapil’s record

In first India versus Sri Lanka Test, Jadeja hit a superb 175*. He got his runs from 228 deliveries. His innings was laced with 17 fours and three sixes. This is now his best score in Tests. He smashed a record for the highest score by an Indian when batting at number seven or lower. He surpassed the feat held by legendary Kapil Dev, who had hit 163 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur.

 150-plus score and five-plus wickets

In the Mohali Test, Jadeja also claimed a total of nine wickets. He produced figures worth 5/41 and 4/46 to achieve the numbers. Jadeja is now the sixth player to score 150-plus and take a five-wicket haul in Tests. He has become only the third Indian to do so. The champion performer is also now the seventh cricketer in Test history with over 200 wickets and a score of 175 or more. The likes of Gary Sobers, Wasim Akram, Jacques Kallis, Shakib Al Hasan, Ian Botham, and Jason Gillespie are the other players with this record.

Other key numbers of Jadeja

Jadeja has taken 27 wickets in Mohali at an average of 14.66. He has two five-wicket hauls here. He also has 327 runs with the bat at an average of 81.75. He has also been adjudged Player of the Match in the last three Test matches in Mohali. Jaddu has taken 32 scalps versus Sri Lanka in Tests. 19 of these wickets have come at home.

Conclusion

There are several top all-rounders in Test cricket and the game overall in the modern-day. From Shakib, Ashwin to that of Wanindu Hasaranga, Ben Stokes, and Jason Holder, their contributions and the consistency shown are superb. However, Jadeja has that extra fizz. He is way ahead in terms of fielding. He is that complete all-rounder who gives you comfort across all departments. It’s safe to say he is the best all-rounder today’s date.
