Michael Atherton insists on the importance of including both Harry Brook and Ben Stokes in England's lineup

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has voiced his astonishment at the omission of Harry Brook from the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. Brook, who endured a challenging stint with SunRisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League 2023, has raised eyebrows, with speculation suggesting that he might be considered as a reserve for the premier tournament.

Pietersen conveyed his shock to Sky Sports regarding the news of Brook’s exclusion, expressing his high regard for the talented cricketer.

“I’m astounded that Brook isn’t in England’s World Cup squad because he is pure quality. I simply cannot believe it.”

“I saw this guy at Headingley two years ago when The Hundred took off, and I knew he was a superstar right away. Someone could play 360 who could hit the same balls over extra-cover or midwicket,” Pietersen observed.

Following the announcement of England’s preliminary squad for the ODI World Cup, which featured Ben Stokes coming out of his ODI retirement, Harry Brook addressed his omission with disappointment.

“Obviously, it’s disappointing, but I can’t do anything about it right now,” Brook said to Sky Sports. “You just have to move on,” he added. I’m doing my best not to worry about it anymore. Stokes is one of the greatest cricketers of all time, so I can’t really complain, can I?”

After receiving criticism for his performance in the first two Tests, Brook managed to regain his reputation in the latter stages of the Ashes series. His participation was critical to England’s victorious comeback during the third Test match in Leeds.

“I feel like I’m playing well right now and that I could potentially contribute to the team.” “However, there’s always something you could do,” Brook concluded.
