Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his sadness over ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg final after being 100 grams overweight on the morning of the competition, as per the rules. She was subsequently replaced by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez.
For many athletes worldwide, the Olympics represent the ultimate pinnacle of their sporting journey, as Ashwin explained.
Ashwin expressed that the decision would be heartbreaking for Vinesh to accept. Following the recent events, Vinesh also announced her retirement from the sport.
“It is grueling, for four and eight years. The training regimens that Olympic athletes is like a meditative ritual. These dedicated athletes have devoted countless years to perfecting their craft. If she had competed, she likely would have won multiple medals for our country,” remarked Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
Indian cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh have voiced their support for wrestler Vinesh Phogat, joining numerous other Indian and international athletes in doing so.
“India’s shooters have won multiple Olympic medals, establishing the sport as a national hub of excellence. This legacy was pioneered by Abhinav Bindra, and carried forward by the recent triumphs of Manu Bhaker, Swapnil Kusale, Sarabjot Singh, and other exceptional talents,” added Ashwin.
The Indian spinner emphasized that motivating athletes and aspiring ones is necessary if India wants to win more medals in the future.
