After India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026, Gautam Gambhir responded to a viral comment made by MS Dhoni, in which the former captain praised Gambhir’s smile. Gambhir shared the reason behind his serious demeanor while sitting in the dugout during games.
Following India’s World Cup triumph, Dhoni broke his typical silence on social media to applaud the team, giving special mention to Gambhir. He noted that Gambhir’s smile, combined with the determination and intensity he displays on the field, made a lasting impression. Speaking to ANI, Gambhir expressed his gratitude for Dhoni’s praise but acknowledged that maintaining a smile during high-pressure international matches can be challenging.
He elaborated that, in India, losing is not an option, and the pressure of expectations naturally results in a serious expression.
“But as a coach, I think it can be really challenging when people comment on things without ever having been in that situation themselves. I appreciate him for his tweet. Still, when you’re in the dugout, the pressure and stakes are incredibly high,” Gambhir said.
“There is always immense pressure on the Indian team. Even if you feel like laughing or smiling — and naturally everyone would — there are times when it’s just not possible, especially in a tournament like the World Cup. In India, losing is often seen as unacceptable. If losing was truly not an option, India would have won every World Cup, but that’s not reality,” he added.
Gambhir also pointed out that in sports, hard work does not always guarantee results, which reinforces why staying focused and composed is important.
“This is the nature of sports. You dedicate your whole life to it, yet there’s never a guarantee of results. It’s not like the stock market where you can predict returns on your investment. In cricket, you may work tirelessly for a year and a half, give it your all, and still have no certainty of winning the World Cup,” he mentioned.
“Consider this — if we hadn’t won the World Cup, or if we had lost in the semi-final, all that effort would have essentially counted for nothing. After investing so much time and energy, that’s why I say sports is very different from other careers,” Gambhir concluded.
