Overview:
Bumrah is also willing to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will be played in the shortest format of the game.
Jasprit Bumrah will now focus on the ODIs as the team starts preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. A BCCI source informed PTI that Bumrah will play more fifty-over matches while skipping T20I series to manage his workload.
The shift in strategy comes after India’s triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, with the team now getting ready for the next global tournament. Bumrah, who has been magnificent for the Indian National Cricket Team across formats, is a key bowler in Test cricket and the ODIs.
According to the BCCI, it is important to manage the workload of the speedster. “Bumrah’s fitness always takes the front seat for the management as far as the ICC tournaments are concerned. He will be involved in the 50-over format, considering the 2027 ODI World Cup,” the source said.
“India will compete in 30-35 matches, and you can’t take a risk,” the source added. Bumrah was at his best in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, taking 14 wickets at an economy rate of 6.12.
Bumrah hasn’t been part of one-day internationals since India’s defeat to Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Back issues have impacted the fast bowler. He missed the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and the decision-makers have adopted a cautious approach, considering his fitness record.
India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup will start after the IPL 2026. The team management, selection panel and the BCCI Centre of Excellence will draft a plan. Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill and head of the Centre of Excellence VVS Laxman will be involved.
Bumrah will continue to play important Test matches and ODIs while opting out of the T20Is.
Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are the main seamers in one-day internationals. Bumrah is also willing to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will be played in the shortest format of the game.
