Michael Atherton discusses India’s ambitions ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup

Overview:

In Ahmedabad, India dominated New Zealand in the championship match, piling up a record 255 for five.

Former England captain Michael Atherton believes India now have a chance of achieving a historic treble after their T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. On Sunday, March 8, Suryakumar Yadav’s team clinched the title by registering a 96-run win over New Zealand in the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

India won the Champions Trophy last year, defeating New Zealand in Dubai, and followed it up with the T20 World Cup victory over the Kiwis. India could potentially secure all the three ICC limited-overs titles when the 2027 ODI World Cup takes place.

“In recent ICC global tournaments, India have emerged victorious in 30 of 32 matches, with their only losses being the 50-over World Cup final to Australia and an earlier game against South Africa in this tournament,” Atherton told Sky Sports.

“India have established themselves as the dominant team across all white-ball formats. They now have the chance to hold the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup, and 50-over World Cup at the same time, which is surely their next target,” Atherton added.

India kicked off their T20 World Cup 2026 journey with a strong showing in the group stage, posting comfortable wins.

India hit a rough patch in the Super Eight round with a heavy 76-run loss to South Africa. They quickly regained momentum, thanks to Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, steering the team to a crucial five-wicket win.

India posted a challenging 253 for seven, with Samson’s 89 anchoring the innings against England in the semi-final. The team held their nerve to win by seven runs and secure a spot in the final. In Ahmedabad, India dominated New Zealand in the championship match, piling up a record 255 for five.
