Axar Patel lit up the field with two breathtaking catches and a superb stop that led to a crucial third wicket, playing a starring role in India’s seven-run victory over England in the T20 World Cup semifinal. Despite being the vice-captain of the squad, Axar was left out of the lineup against South Africa in the Super 8 opener, leaving the all-rounder visibly frustrated.

India’s choice to bench Axar was due to strategic matchups against left-handed hitters. While the vice-captain was displeased, Suryakumar Yadav and the coaching team clarified the plan, and Axar accepted it.

“All major decisions are made together with the coach. We carefully assess the match-ups. Axar Patel was understandably upset when he was left out for the South Africa game. He had every right to feel that way, but we explained the reason behind our decision,” Suryakumar Yadav said.

Suryakumar also addressed Varun Chakravarthy’s form, noting the mystery spinner has struggled since the Super 8 stage. Even in the semi-final clash against England, he conceded 64 runs from his four overs.

“There’s no concern about Varun’s form. When you win, it doesn’t bother you much. The atmosphere in the camp is relaxed and cheerful. Playing in the final is a special feeling, and everyone is thrilled,” he added.
