Overview:
The available options across formats have gradually reduced, leaving selectors and team management concerned about maintaining a strong bench of pace bowlers for the future.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has turned to former pace spearhead Zaheer Khan to help strengthen the country’s fast-bowling pipeline. According to sources, Zaheer is expected to conduct specialised camps at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru during the first week of March, focusing on developing emerging quick bowlers.
At present, the CoE does not have a dedicated fast-bowling coach. Troy Cooley, who had served in the role for four years, stepped down in December after reaching the age of 60. Earlier this month, on February 9, the BCCI invited applications to fill the vacancy.
“A selected group of pace bowlers from various state associations has been called up to attend a dedicated fast-bowling camp scheduled from February 28 to March 2 at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The programme will be overseen by Zaheer Khan, and CoE’s Head of Cricket, VVS Laxman, has shown strong interest in driving this initiative forward,” a BCCI insider revealed.
“Zaheer has shown strong interest in moving into coaching. His recent stint with Lucknow Super Giants reflects his desire to contribute to the development of young players. It’s encouraging that a fast bowler of his experience and reputation is open to being part of BCCI initiatives. However, whether he is ready to accept a full-time position at the Centre of Excellence remains uncertain, as such a role would demand significant time and commitment away from his family,” the source said.
India’s fast-bowling depth has come under scrutiny in recent seasons, particularly in Test cricket. The available options across formats have gradually reduced, leaving selectors and team management concerned about maintaining a strong bench of pace bowlers for the future.
The coach appointed at the Centre of Excellence will be expected to collaborate closely with the Indian team’s support staff. The primary objective is to design and implement structured programmes aimed at grooming the next generation of fast bowlers.
Traditionally, the BCCI has shown preference for Indian coaches who understand the domestic system. Currently, Gautam Gambhir’s coaching setup includes Sitanshu Kotak, who has prior experience working with the former National Cricket Academy, now rebranded as the CoE. It remains uncertain how deeply Zaheer Khan is willing to be involved.
