Talk around a possible Pakistan withdrawal from the T20 World Cup has continued to gather momentum, with the humour only amplifying online. The light-hearted social media chatter is rooted in a more serious situation, with reports indicating that Pakistan are reviewing their stance on participating in the T20 World Cup as a mark of support for Bangladesh. Bangladesh have already opted out of the 2026 event after the ICC turned down their request to shift matches from India to Sri Lanka, stating that the security-related concerns did not meet the threshold for relocation.
Earlier, Iceland Cricket had captured attention after posting a humorous message suggesting they were willing to step in should Pakistan vacate their place, as long as adequate notice was given. The post quickly drew significant engagement, surpassing 500,000 views, with the account later escalating the joke by sharing images of increasing flight fares to Colombo in a playful swipe at the International Cricket Council.
“Our players are from all walks of life and cannot simply drop their occupations to fly halfway around the world,” the account said, citing bakers, ship captains and bankers among their squad. Our loss is likely Uganda’s gain,” Iceland Cricket Association posted on X.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on February 7 and will proceed without Bangladesh among the competing teams. Bangladesh’s absence follows a decision to withdraw after the International Cricket Council declined their appeal to move fixtures from India to Sri Lanka.
The Bangladesh board had raised travel safety concerns in the aftermath of an incident involving Mustafizur Rahman. After reviewing the matter, the ICC concluded that the assessed risk did not meet the criteria required for a venue change, prompting Bangladesh to step away from the tournament.
