Overview:

Iyer is poised to return to his middle-order role and reclaim the vice-captaincy for India. In his absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad impressed at No. 4, marking his ODI comeback with a century in Raipur.

Shreyas Iyer has received fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), making him available for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.

He was included in India’s squad subject to a fitness clause, with the selectors and medical team closely monitoring his recovery after a long injury break. His inclusion in the upcoming series was contingent on how well his body responded to the demands of competitive cricket, particularly in domestic matches.

Iyer played for Mumbai in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, leading the side and batting at No. 4 against Himachal Pradesh. He struck a smooth 82 from 53 balls, and importantly, there were no signs of physical discomfort during or after his innings, putting concerns about his fitness to rest.

Iyer was told to complete in Mumbai’s upcoming match against Punjab on January 8 before getting formal clearance. However, after reviewing his recovery and match readiness, the CoE medical staff were satisfied and granted him clearance earlier than anticipated.

Iyer has been out of action since October after suffering a spleen injury in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The injury necessitated hospitalisation, keeping him sidelined for nearly three months and halting his momentum for selection.

Iyer is poised to return to his middle-order role and reclaim the vice-captaincy for India. In his absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad impressed at No. 4, marking his ODI comeback with a century in Raipur.

The ODI series against New Zealand might not have vast consequences on its own, but Iyer’s comeback gives a key lift to India’s 50-over approach. A solid middle order has always been a team asset, and if Iyer can quickly rediscover his peak form, it could be immensely beneficial, considering his ability to steer India to success in major events.
