MSK Prasad has defended Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, urging the team management to stop adding unnecessary stress. With reports claiming that selectors want the duo to return to domestic cricket to show their commitment, Prasad reminded everyone that Kohli’s fitness remains unmatched, and Rohit’s recent weight loss of over 10 kilos proves his dedication to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Ahead of the series opener against South Africa, reports suggested that the selectors had asked senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket. However, Kohli shut down the speculation with a spectacular century, while Rohit followed up with a fiery half-century in Ranchi, silencing any concerns about their commitment. Kohli later pointed out that playing domestic cricket for preparation isn’t the method that works for him, revealing his own approach to getting ready for big matches.

“I’ve never been someone who believes in over-preparing, if that makes sense. For me, cricket has always been more mental. As long as I feel mentally ready to play, I put in the physical work every day. It’s no longer just about cricket for me.”

Prasad addressed the ongoing discussion about senior players being urged to play domestic cricket, advising the management to prevent any confusion or undue pressure. He referenced how MS Dhoni’s situation was managed in the past, stressing the importance of clear, consistent communication and accountability.

“One must ensure that the issue isn’t raised repeatedly. We never discussed domestic cricket with MS Dhoni, who played when he felt it was needed. It’s important to have clear communication from the start. Otherwise, follow the perform-or-perish approach. There should be no room for uncertainty,” Prasad told the Times of India.

Prasad told the management to be mindful of senior players like Kohli and Rohit, advising against disrupting those who consistently deliver. He emphasised that domestic cricket should align with their schedules, as their involvement would inspire young cricketers at the state level.

“The first priority should be to avoid confusing the minds of senior players. They are the ones delivering results, not the younger generation. It would be ideal for them to play domestic cricket when not on national duty, as it will also motivate young players in the state teams,” he added.
