Overview:

His game is suited to white-ball formats, but the young batter is obsessed with red-ball cricket.

Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has revealed that World No.1 batter in T20Is Abhishek Sharma wants to play Test cricket for the India National Cricket Team. The southpaw has been sensational in the shortest format of the game and scored over 300 runs in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025, which was won by the Men in Blue.

Abhishek is being looked into for the ODIs, considering Rohit Sharma’s age and likely retirement. He is in touch with Lara and is seeking his input to play the longest format of the game. His game is suited to white-ball formats, but the young batter is obsessed with red-ball cricket. “I know Abhishek from SRH days. He is an amazing and special player. I think Yuvraj has a big influence on him. His bat speed and the way he plays the shots,” Lara said.

“He would talk to me about Test cricket and how he could play this format. Despite his success in T20Is and likely future in ODI cricket, he is fond of the five-day format, which is great for someone like him. It is great to see the improvement he has shown in a span of a few years. He is hungry to play all the formats,” he added.
