Afghanistan’s hopes of progressing in the Asia Cup 2025 were dashed despite an extraordinary knock of 60 runs off just 22 balls by Mohammad Nabi in their Group B clash against Sri Lanka on Thursday. The 40-year-old veteran defied age and ruthlessly attacking the Sri Lankan bowlers, particularly Dunith Wellalage, who was hit for five sixes in a single over. However, Nabi was left in disbelief when reporters informed him that Wellalage’s father had tragically passed away from a heart attack, reportedly around the same time the match had reached its mid-innings break.

Wellalage remained unaware of the devastating news while on the field. After the game, Sri Lanka’s coach, Sanath Jayasuriya was seen consoling Wellalage.

When Nabi found out that the bowler he had taken to cleaners during the match had tragically lost his father, he was shocked. A reporter was heard informing him. “Wellalage’s father passed away… by heart attack, just during mid-break of the match.”

Nabi also took to social media to share his condolences after hearing the tragic news. “Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong Brother,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Kusal Mendis was named the Player of the Match for Sri Lanka after playing a key role in their successful chase of 170 runs, finishing unbeaten on 74 from 52 balls. Kamindu Mendis also made a significant contribution, scoring 26 runs off 13 balls in the final stages of the game.
