Overview:
The Asia Cup concludes on September 29, with the first Test starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by the second in New Delhi from October 10-14. Two Tests against South Africa are scheduled for November.
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading pace bowler, was released from the national squad on Friday after fulfilling his commitment of playing three Tests in the ongoing five-match series against England. During the three matches, the 31-year-old bowler delivered 119.4 overs and took 14 wickets.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Bumrah would not be playing in the fifth Test against England. His performance was remarkable, including two five-wicket hauls one at Headingley in the first Test and another at Lord’s in the third.
Bumrah faced an unusual setback in Manchester, conceding over 100 runs in an innings for the first time. Despite this, with 219 wickets from 48 Tests, he remains a key part of India’s bowling attack. Ajit Agarkar, the selection committee chairman, confirmed that Bumrah would be limited to three Tests in the series as part of efforts to manage his workload effectively.
India‘s next focus is on the Asia Cup, but Bumrah is unlikely to feature, as the Test series against the West Indies starts shortly after the tournament ends. The Asia Cup concludes on September 29, with the first Test starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by the second in New Delhi from October 10-14. Two Tests against South Africa are scheduled for November.
“It will be a difficult decision, but Bumrah has a strong passion for Test cricket, and with World Test Championship points up for grabs, it’s a critical factor. As for T20s, he could feature in the series against New Zealand in January, which would serve as a preparation for the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI source familiar with the selection process told PTI.
“If Bumrah participates in the Asia Cup and India reach the final, he wouldn’t be available for the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. The key question is whether Bumrah is important for the West Indies series or if he should take part in the Asia Cup after a month-long break and then play the two Tests against South Africa. That decision will need to be made by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir,” the source explained.
