Virat Kohli to open the innings for RCB in IPL 2025

Virat Kohli is set to play his 18th IPL season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The veteran has played over 250 matches for the franchise so far. However, this season might feel different for him. Kohli retired from international T20 cricket after India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024.

Now, his entire focus in T20 cricket is on the IPL. Some experts have wondered if this will change his mindset. However, former India spinner Piyush Chawla believes Virat Kohli will still perform at his best.

Chawla Praises Kohli’s Consistency

Speaking to ANI, Chawla praised Kohli’s record. He said, “He always delivers for his team. If you look at his numbers, they speak for themselves.” Chawla also addressed concerns about Kohli’s strike rate, adding, “We talk a lot about strike rates. But Kohli’s strike rate has always been good, 130 plus, sometimes 140.”

Chawla explained that Kohli’s role in the team is important. He believes every team needs a player like him.“You need someone to hold one end. If Virat does that at a strike rate of 130, it is very valuable.”

Kohli’s Incredible IPL Record

Kohli is the highest run-scorer in IPL history. He has scored 8004 runs in 252 games at a strike rate of 131. In IPL 2024, he had his best season in terms of strike rate. He won the Orange Cap with 741 runs at 154.70. His strike rate was even better than his famous 2016 season, where he scored 973 runs.

Kohli’s Hunger for Success

Chawla believes Kohli’s mindset and effort set him apart. “Virat Kohli always gives his 200%. He puts his body on the line. He is always energetic and ready to do something special for his team.”

However, the spinner also admitted that Kohli will still feel pressure. The one thing missing from his career is an IPL trophy.

“No matter what, there is always pressure. Even if you retire from T20 cricket, you play for your reputation. Kohli will still feel those butterflies in his stomach,” Chawla concluded.

With his full focus on IPL, Kohli will be eager to help RCB win their first-ever title.
