Rohit Sharma
RP Singh is often mistaken for India captain Rohit Sharma.

The outcome of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand could have consequences for Indian cricket. According to the Times of India, Rohit Sharma’s future as a captain will be decided in the coming weeks. The BCCI wants a captain who can lead the team in the next two years.

There could be a conversation about moving on from Rohit in ODIs and Test cricket, with the apex body of Indian cricket waiting to announce the central contracts after the final against the Kiwis on March 9 in Dubai.

Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar discussed future assignments with Rohit after returning from Australia.

“Rohit wants to play for India for a few more years. He has been told to disclose his plans after the Champions Trophy. Retirement is his call but not the captaincy. Rohit knows the team needs a stable skipper to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. The board has also spoken to Virat Kohli, but his future seems safe,” a BCCI source told the newspaper.

India have done well in the Champions Trophy after failing miserably in Test cricket at home and in Australia.

Rohit, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja have Grade A+ contracts. According to the rules, this category is given to cricketers who perform consistently across formats.

With Rohit, Virat, and Jadeja retired from T20Is, the board must decide whether to downgrade them or continue with the same group. It will be decided after considering their Champions Trophy performances.

“The board will wait for Rohit’s decision. If he retires after the Champions Trophy, then officails will see what need to be done. There is no denying the fact that he led to success in the 2024 T20 World Cup and also did well in the Champions Trophy,” the source added.

Shubman Gill is the current vice-captain in the ODIs, and he could soon replace Rohit as skipper.
