In a thrilling encounter during the 2023 Asia Cup game against India in Colombo, Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage achieved a milestone by dismissing Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli. Wellalage’s dream wicket came true as he spearheaded Sri Lanka’s fightback after India had a strong start.
With impressive bowling skills, Wellalage managed to take down three key Indian batsmen in quick succession, including Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and the prize wicket of Virat Kohli. Kohli’s dismissal came from a well-executed short delivery, which he sent straight to short mid-wicket, where Dasun Shanaka made a simple catch.
After the match, Dunith Wellalage expressed his gratitude to his coaches and the management for their support in honing his bowling skills, particularly his spin bowling coach.
“I want to thank my management and spin bowling coach, especially. I made an effort to bowl my usual variations without giving up runs. Virat Kohli’s wicket was my dream,” he remarked.
Despite the challenging playing surface, Wellalage remained confident in Sri Lanka’s batting lineup.
“The surface is difficult and uneven, but we have a strong batting lineup, and we will fight hard,” he added.
Wellalage received commendable support from Charith Asalanka, whose off-spin bowling contributed four crucial wickets to complement Wellalage’s impressive 5/40. The final wicket of Axar Patel was secured by Maheesh Theekshana.
