With the feat, Ravindra etched his name into history books as he became the player with the joint-most wickets through bowled dismissals in Test innings by an Indian. 1. Anil Kumble
The 52-year-old is India’s leading wicket-taker with 619 wickets in Tests. Kumble has scripted several records in his illustrious career, with the best being taking ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999. Further, in the 1992 Test game against South Africa in Johannesburg, Kumble registered the figures of 53/6 in 44 overs, where five of his wickets came through bowled dismissals. The match ended in a draw, but Kumble was the leading wicket-taker of the game with eight wickets under his kitty. At that time, Anil became the 3rd Indian to have five bowled dismissals in Test innings.
2. Jashubhai Patel
Another spinner on the list is Jashubhai Patel, who was also the first Indian ever to have five bowled dismissals in a Test match. Patel, who had a suspicious action, due to the arm injury he sustained when he fell from a tree at a young age, took nine wickets against Australia in the Kanpur match in 1959. During the match’s first innings, Jashubhai picked up nine wickets for 69 runs in his 36 overs. His figures are the 2nd best bowling figures in innings by an Indian in Tests, only behind Anil Kumble, who took a ten-wicket haul against Pakistan. In that innings, Patel clean-bowled five batters and was India’s leading contributor in their 119-run victory against Australia. Notably, Patel took a five-wicket haul in the 2nd innings as well.
3. Bapu Nadkarni
Bapu Nadkarni is another spinner who has taken five dismissals by bowling a batter out. During the 3rd Test against Australia in the 1959/60 season, Bapu took six wickets in the first innings, out of which five were through rattling the opponent’s stumps. Nadkarni played 41 Tests and took 88 wickets. Also, Nadkarni is known for his economical bowling. The late cricketer holds the record for bowling straight 21.5 overs without conceding a run against England in Madras on January 12, 1964.
4. Ravindra Jadeja
India’s ace all-rounder scripted history in the recently concluded Delhi Test, as he took seven wickets in the 2nd innings, out of which five were bowled dismissals. Jadeja became the 4th player to have five bowled dismissals by an Indian in Test innings. Jadeja, the No.1 ranked all-rounder in Tests, got rewarded with the player of the match award for his 10-wicket haul in the match. The 34-year-old has played 62 Tests. The 34-year-old has 2619 runs and 259 wickets. The Saurashtra star recently became the quickest Asian to 2500 runs and 250+ wickets.
