ABOUT HARSHAL PATEL

Harshal Patel, the right-arm seamer with a big outswinger, has gone through many ups and downs to make a name for himself in the cricketing fraternity. Unable to find a place in Gujarat’s team, the Sanand-born player moved to Haryana.

DOMESTIC CIRCUIT

Harshal Patel impressed everyone with his performance in the 2008-09 Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy. Playing for Gujarat, the right-arm fast bowler scalped 23 wickets from just seven games in the tournament. He then made his List A debut in 2009 during the Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Maharashtra in Rajkot.

However, despite his continuous efforts to make a name for himself in the domestic circuit, Harshal was ignored by the Gujarat selectors for the first-class side. As a result, Harshal moved to Haryana and made an immediate impact in his debut Ranji Trophy season in 2011-12.

Harshal had a terrific season in 2019-20 Ranji Trophy as he took 52 wickets in 9 games and broke Rajinder Goel’s 36-year-old record of most wickets for Haryana in a single Ranji Trophy season. He also scored 292 runs at an average of 22.46, batting mostly at No. 8.

Patel was the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2019-20.

UNDER-19 DAYS

Harshal was named in India’s Under-19 squad for 2010 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand but was kept on the bench for the entire duration of the tournament.

INDIAN PREMIERE LEAGUE

After his impressive performances in domestic cricket, Mumbai Indians bought Harshal Patel for Rs 8 lakh in the 2010 IPL auction. But the pacer didn’t get a chance to prove his mettle.

In 2012, the bowler then became a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad. But he was mostly used as a backup seamer in the RCB camp rather than a first-choice player.

He did not play a single game in IPL 2013 but was bought back by the Bangalore-based franchise in the 2014 player auction for Rs 40 lakh.

Harshal finally got a chance to showcase his talent on the IPL stage in 2015 when he took 17 wickets for the Virat Kohli-led side in 15 games at an economy rate of 7.48.

In 2018, the Gujarat-born player was roped in by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for Rs 20 lakh. But the Delhi-based franchise later traded him back to RCB ahead of the IPL 2021 auction in Chennai.

Notably, Harshal was one of the best performers for RCB in the 14th edition of IPL. He played 7 matches in the IPL 2021 and took 17 scalps, including a five-wicket haul at an economy rate of 9.17 before the marquee tournament was suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis.
