The coronavirus outbreak has been a worldwide catastrophe and nearly all major sport in the world have faced severe issues. From many events getting postponed or cancelled, the next phase at this moment is unknown. In cricket, the majority of the upcoming international series got cancelled, whereas, several ongoing series got postponed/cancelled. The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League was set to start from March 29 onwards. And as days passed by, the excitement level seemed to gain a stronghold. However, the deadly COVD-19 virus has stalled everything at the moment.

IPL 2020 was postponed to April 15. Firstly, it was claimed that foreign players will be available from mid-April. Last week, India’s Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju said that fans are likely not to be involved and the event will be played behind closed doors. However, the BCCI then postponed the marquee event and said that the safety and well-being of fans, athletes and employees is a major priority.

At the moment, it is unknown what’s going to be the exact scenario. If the IPL does start from April 15, and things do not improve, then one might see the tournament being played behind closed doors. With no fans present, the tourney will lose its charm. Another major aspect that will come forward is the availability of foreign stars. Will they travel? What’s the criteria for the visas?

At the moment, the BCCI has done the right thing by taking the decision to at least have a date in mind. On top of that, the board is in touch with the government authorities and that makes things crucial. We might not have the IPL this year and even if we do, it could be a curtailed affair. But full marks to the BCCI for being in touch with the larger picture and safety.

The coronavirus has had over 1,70,000-plus cases. Sadly, over 6,500-plus people have lost their lives.
