After month of speculations and assumptions, the Indian coach saga finally concluded with the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian cricket team till 2019.
Though, the appointment of Shastri was influenced by the preference of Indian skipper Virat Kohli, inclusion of Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid in the support staff came as surprise for the fans. Their appointment however, have evoked yet another controversy with reports of Shastri not amused with the decision of CAC to rope in Zaheer Khan as a bowling coach instead of his pet man Bharat Arun. The inclusion of the two Indian legends was also a sign of individual egos between Ravi Shastri and Sourav Ganguly, with the latter making things even by getting Zaheer on the board to cut short the powers given to the new Indian coach.
However, It is unlikely that the former Indian team director will settle anything less than Bharat Arun as he is expected to meet to top BCCI officials this weekend. The probability of Shastri getting his desired support staff has also reached new heights with BCCI declaring Zaheer as a bowling consultant, compared to CAC who selected him as a bowling coach.
With India playing most of their games away from home in the next twenty months, the appointment of the two legends seemed a wise move but Shastri’s avidity to get the free reigns has resulted in the dispute which was uncalled for. Also, with Zaheer unlikely to give more than 100 days as a coach, chances of Bharat Arun preceding the former Indian pacer is more than likely. Bharat Arun has only taken 5 wickets in his career when compared to Zaheer who has taken over 600 wickets in his International career but the lobbying of the duo of Shastri – Kohli over Arun may result in a long term contract for the former Indian all-rounder.
