CONTROVERSIES OF SARFARAZ AHMED
Sarfaraz Ahmed is a high-profile and successful athlete, and as such, he has faced his share of controversies over the years.
- His sudden oust from the two T20 matches against Sri Lanka in 2015 drew the attention of the media which later became an unnecessary issue according to the Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis. He said these headlines overshadow their performance and past victories against the Sri Lankan cricket Team.
- In June 2017, after Pakistan had won their last pool match of the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka to make it to the semifinals, Sarfraz was fined 20% of his match fees by the Panel of ICC Match Referees after they found Pakistan to be one over short when time allowances were taken into consideration. The verdict said if the Pakistan team violated Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support panel, the skipper of the team could face a one-match ban in the tournament. All the other players were fined 10% of their match fees under the law.
- In January 2019, during the second ODI of the series against South Africa, Sarfaraz was caught on the stump mics using a racial slur towards Andile Phehlukwayo. He played in the third ODI match, but was then suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the next four matches, missing the last two ODIs and the first two T20Is of the tour. Shoaib Malik captained the Pakistan team in Sarfaraz’s place. The following month, the PCB confirmed Sarfaraz as the team’s captain, and stated he would lead the squad at the 2019 Cricket World Cup
