Since having last played for West Indies in 2019, Chris Gayle has made a return to the T20I squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka. The veteran batsman is in no mood to hang up his boots just yet and the magic could continue for some more time. Gayle would love to be a part of the World T20 side for West Indies later this year and this is why the Lanka series is vital for the southpaw. He has been one of the best batsmen for his national team in the shortest format of the game.
Gayle recently stated in a press conference that he wants to own three World T20 titles and the event in India presents him the perfect opportunity. He is also willing to bat anywhere the side deems him fit. Having batted at number three in the IPL 2020 season for Punjab Kings, Gayle mustered 395 runs in nine innings for the side. He also had a strike-rate of 144.16. The opening batsman provides that extra bit of edge of batting in a different position as Windies have four openers in the mix.
Gayle has been the leader in T20 cricket and boasts of major records. At 41, he has shown that he can strike the ball with ease and be a match-winner. In 58 T20Is, he has racked up 1,627 runs at 32.54. He has two tons and 13 fifties under his belt. The series can see him get past the 1,700-run mark in T20Is. His experience can be a positive factor for the Windies outfit as they want to dominate the shortest format with another World T20 title on offer.
Gayle has to score the desired runs in the Sri Lanka series and show that he is the best bet for Windies. He will have that extra motivation to come in and steer his side to crucial wins. Gayle is fit and the positive mindset has contributed in his success with the bat. This series can help Gayle get into the groove with plenty of cricket coming for Windies ahead of the World T20. Confidence and form are the attributes one would want to see in Gayle. If he cracks the code, then Gayle can be ominous for WI with the global event set to be in India.
His performances in the IPL have been strong and Gayle knows every bit of the conditions. That will be a major bonus for the Windies side. With fellow veteran stars such as Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard in the mix, Windies have the experience required to go at teams and dominate the scenes. With an inexperienced Sri Lanka finding themselves, Gayle has the perfect platform to start well and kick start his return on a positive note. One expects Gayle to go big and enjoy himself in the middle.
Gayle has mustered 920 runs in ICC T20 World Cups and can become just the second player after Mahela Jayawardene to get past 1,000 runs. He loves batting in the mega event and an in-form Gayle can be menacing for any opponent. If he gets going in India, Windies have a chance to win third consecutive T20 World Cup title.
