Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has expressed surprise at Rajasthan Royals’ management decision to retain Yashasvi Jaiswal for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

According to him, Yashasvi was too inexperienced to be retained by the franchise.

The 20-year old was retained for Rs 4 crore. He scored 249 runs in 10 matches last season at an average of 24.90 and a strike rate of 148.21.

Analyzing the decision to retain Jaiswal during an interaction on ESPNcricinfo, he said: “I was surprised that the franchise retained him. I think he will open with Devdutt Padikkal. Jaiswal was dropped during the Ranji Trophy. When you are retained, there is a different responsibility.

“The same goes for Abdul Samad and Umran Malik from the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). These players haven’t been successful in the tournament. How they handle the pressure will be interesting to see.”

The left-handed batter has played 23 T20 matches in which he has amassed 429 runs at an average of 19.50 and a strike rate of 128.82.
