Shahid Afridi at a press conference
Shahid Afridi against players preferring overseas leagues over home season

On January 5, Pakistan’s interim chief selector Shahid Afridi announced the squad for the ODI series against New Zealand, starting on January 9.

The 45-year-old, who recently replaced Mohammad Wasim as the interim chief selector, in a press conference released the squad and also answered a few questions by the media present at the venue.

One of the veteran journalists touched upon Pakistani players giving more importance to foreign leagues over the ongoing home season.

He talked about Shadab Khan, who is playing in the BBL, and a bunch of players who will travel to Bangladesh for the Bangladesh Premier League.

Shahid agreed with the journalist’s point and said he is absolutely against players going to foreign leagues when the home season is going on. Afridi said they have issued a few NOCs to certain players but have asked them to return at least ten days before PSL begins.

“I am absolutely against players playing in foreign leagues when the domestic season is on. Yes, if there are no scheduled matches in Pakistan, then players are allowed to play in other leagues, they will get exposure but not when home series are on.”

“We have sent a few players to Bangladesh Premier League, but strictly told them to return at least ten days before the start of the PSL. It does not matter if they play five or two matches.”
