Ravi Shastri and Mohammed Shami
When Mohammed Shami wanted to quit cricket

Similar to how former India fielding coach, R Sridhar rose to fame after his latest book, ‘Coaching Beyond’ where he shed light on several locker room talks of Indian players, former bowling coach Bharat Arun is the latest to jump on the bandwagon and reveal a few unheard stories of the Indian side.

In the latest development, Arun recalled the time an angry Mohammed Shami failed the yo-yo test in 2018, following which he wanted to retire from the game.

“Before the 2018 England tour, we conducted a Yo-Yo test which Shami had failed. As a result, he got replaced by Navdeep Saini, and unfortunately for him, at the same time, he was going through turmoil in his personal life. Shami called me up and said that he wants to meet.”

“When we met, he was unfit, mentally gone and angrily said he wants to quit playing cricket. I immediately took him to the head coach Ravi Shastri. Ravi, in his usual demeanour, said to him, ”What will you do if not cricket? Do you know anything else than cricket? It is better to do what you are skilled at.'”

“Following Ravi’s advice, Shami was sent to NCA for four weeks, and after the camp, he called me up and said that he has become super fit and is all ready to run as much as possible.”

Shami recently became the 9th Indian bowler to have 400 international wickets.
