Mumbai Indians knocked Lucknow Super Giants out of IPL 16, as the Rohit Sharma-led side registered their biggest win of the season and beat LSG by 81 runs.
MI, batting first, put a below-par score of 182/8 on the board. Chasing 183, LSG tumbled for 101 courtesy of a maiden five-wicket haul by uncapped Akash Madhwal.
The 29-year-old, who is playing in his debut season, came to the scene in the later half of the tournament, and against LSG, he registered a spell of 5/5 in 3.3 overs.
With the feat, Akash scripted a special record, as the right-arm seamer became the first bowler in the history of IPL to take a five-wicket haul in the eliminator.
Further, with the figures of 5/5, Akash levelled Anil Kumble’s feat of the best bowling figure by an Indian in the history of IPL. Notably, Kumble registered the figures of 5/5 against Rajasthan Royals in the 2009 edition. Overall, Madhwal is fifth on the list of best bowling figures in the history of IPL.
This season, Akash has taken 13 wickets in seven games and has emerged as the premier bowler for MI in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer, who are out of action because of injuries.
