A year ago, on November 17, 2021, Madhya Pradesh star Venkatesh Iyer made his international debut against New Zealand. The 27-year-old rose to the occasion after a spectacular IPL season with KKR that year.
In the 2021 IPL edition, Venkatesh Iyer opened for KKR, and in just ten matches, he scored 370 runs, including four half-centuries. The MP star contributed heavily with the bat and helped his side reach the finals.
His run with the bat earned him his maiden India call-up. The issue was the top order and opening slot, in particular, was jam-packed. Thus, the management decided to put Iyer into the lower middle order, where he failed miserably and slowly dropped out of the squad for his poor batting.
During a regular interaction with fans, former India opener turned analyst Aakash Chopra posted a series of tweets where he bashed the Indian selectors for ruining Venkatesh Iyer’s career with their tactics.
He tweeted, “An example of picking players based on IPL performances & then asking them to perform a different role…and then drop them completely after failing in the IPL (while playing a different role). Meet Venkatesh Iyer. Opened for KKR. Got picked as a finisher…and then dropped!!!”
“Also, Indian selectors will have to take a call with regard to picking the IPL performers. All of them bat in the top 3 but for India, we want them to play a radically different role. How’s that fair?”
Iyer has played 11 matches for India across all formats and scored just 157 runs.
