The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will move to Supreme Court to file a plea for extending the tenures of its President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah, considering the fact that election to those posts is hard to conduct due to the rise in cases of the coronavirus.

While Sourav Ganguly’s tenure will come to an end on July 26, Shah’s term has already ended.

Ganguly has no opposition ahead of him

It was the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) Secretary, Aditya Verma who had filed a petition seeking a ban on the extension of Ganguly’s and Shah’s tenures. However, now the petitioner has decided against his earlier move, thereby making sure that the extension goes smoothly if the apex court approves it.

“We have decided that our lawyers will not contest the plea so that the extension goes smooth. It is a decision that has been forced upon us by the pandemic. We also believe that Sourav has had a very limited tenure and a small-time to settle down in the role of President,” Verma said to New Indian Express.

“Our request will be to let the existing set-up continue till the situation improves and becomes a sound enough to conduct the election,” he added.

Earlier BCCI had sought to amend the rules in its AGM meeting trying to extend the current tenure of both Shah and Ganguly till 2025, which has not been approved.
