Fans love spotting cricket stars with their families. When these legends are with their wives or loved ones it gives them a more humble, humane touch. Recently, a video of Rohit Sharma with his daughter and wife garnered a lot of attention for its cuteness factor. Cricket fans are often curious to learn more about the better halves of their icons. With the IPL fever building up, we tell you in detail about the five WAGS of the T20 league’s superstar performers.
1. Ritika Sajdeh
Ritika Sajdeh is the wife of Mumbai Indians captain and Team India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma. Ritika is a sports event manager by profession and used to look after Rohit’s cricket engagements as his manager. Ritika is also former cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s rakhi sister. Ritika and Rohit used to meet continuously for work and that is how they became good friends. This friendship gradually turned into love.
Before getting married, Ritika and Rohit knew each other for six years. Rohit proposed Ritika with a solitaire ring at the Borivali Sports Club, Mumbai. This is the ground where he started his cricketing career at the age of 11. Ritika accepted the proposal! Rohit and Ritika tied the knot on December 13, 2015. Their first child Samaira was born in December 2018.
2. Sakshi Rawat
Sakshi Rawat is married to India’s Captain Cool MS Dhoni. The two knew each other since childhood. However, love blossomed only when they grew up. Apparently, Dhoni and Sakshi’s father worked in the same company in Ranchi and the families got along well. Reportedly, they went to the same school as well. However, Sakshi’s family had to shift to Dehradun after which the two lost touch. Dhoni and Sakshi met again in 2007 in Kolkata at the Taj Bengal. Team India were staying at the hotel as India had to play a match against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens.
Sakshi was working as an intern and was introduced to Dhoni by his manager, Yudhajit Dutta. Sakshi and Yudhajit were friends. It was the last working day of Sakshi’s internship. Dhoni took her number from Dutta and began wooing Sakshi. They started dating in March 2008. Sakshi later attended Dhoni’s birthday bash in the same year. After dating for a couple of years, they got married on July 4, 2010. Their wedding was a well-kept secret. Their daughter Ziva was born on February 6, 2015.
3. Anushka Sharma
Bollywood actor-producer Anushka Sharma is the better half of Team India captain Virat Kohli. The two first met during an ad shoot for a shampoo brand in 2013. They instantly hit it off. As rumours started doing the rounds, they made their relationship official in 2014, saying, “We are not hiding anything. We are two normal young people in a relationship.” The two started making public appearances and were famously spotted together at an Indian Super League football match in Pune.
Virat was lavish in his admiration for Anushka. During an ODI against Sri Lanka, he kissed his bat and then blew a flying kiss to Anushka in the stands. He repeated the same a few more times later in his career. In early 2016, rumour-mongering around their split started doing the rounds after Virat unfollowed Anushka on social media. They were back together soon though. The Indian captain constantly defended Anushka against social media backlash over his poor on-field performances.
Despite going through a lot, they stayed strong. Virat and Anushka were special guests at Yuvraj Singh and Hazel Keech’s destination wedding in Goa in 2016. The duo themselves tied the knot in a fairy-tale wedding at a countryside resort in Tuscany in a private ceremony in December 2017. They later hosted a grand reception for friends. The couple were blessed with a baby girl in January this year.
4. Danielle Swart
Danielle Swart is the wife of RCB stalwart AB de Villiers. His love story is as attractive as his batting. De Villiers first saw Danielle at a game lodge. The cricketer was introduced to the owner of the place, John Swart, who then introduced him to his wife and daughter Danielle. In ABD’s own words, it was love at first sight.
They met again at his brother’s wedding. de Villiers heard Danielle sing his favourite song and fell in love all over again. In 2012, the cricketer met Danielle’s parents with the proposal of marriage. Danielle’s parents even helped him in finding a perfect ring for their daughter. During the IPL in India, de Villiers chose the iconic Taj Mahal to propose Danielle. He asked two people from the RCB set up to hide behind the trees and capture the romantic moment.
De Villiers went down on his knees and recited a speech, which ended with the question “You’re the one I want to live with forever. Danielle, will you marry me?” Danielle was in tears and gave ABD a hug, but no answer. She eventually replied, “Sorry, bud, that was a nice presentation but this is not going to happen. Would you mind if we go back to Bangalore?” It did happen though as the two tied the knot in 2013 and are blessed with three children.
5. Candice Falzon
David Warner’s wife, Candice Falzon is a retired professional ironwoman. In an interview with Australian magazine New Idea, Warner revealed that he and Candice met via Twitter and became a couple in 2013.
“I was away in England for the Ashes and I got another message from Candice after I was involved in an incident,” Warner said. Candice’s message read: “Just letting you know I am thinking of you and I know how hard it can be being away from home.” After that, they just started texting and Skyping. Their daughter Ivy Mae was born in 2014. The same year, Warne proposed marriage to Candice in Cape Town, South Africa. They tied the knot in a grand ceremony held at the Terrara House Estate on the South Coast in NSW in April 2015.
The Warners have had their ups and downs. Candice suffered a miscarriage in 2018, weeks after the ball-tampering scandal that saw the cricketer being banned. The couple has fought through tough times together. They keep sharing lovely family pics on social media. They have two more daughters – Indi Rae (born in January 2016) and Isla Rose (born in June 2019).
