Punjab Kings thrashed champions Mumbai Indians in match number 17 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season on Friday at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Punjab won the toss and asked MI to bat first. The Rohit Sharma-led side posted a paltry score of 131/6 in 20 overs. Senior Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and young spinner Ravi Bishnoi claimed identical figures of 2/21 each to hurt the champions.
MI couldn’t get going in the powerplay overs, managing to score just 21 runs for the loss of one wicket. They were reduced to 26/2 in the seventh over. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav added 81 runs next and took MI to a much better position. However, PBKS rallied back with wickets and didn’t allow MI to score aplenty at the death. KL Rahul-led PBKS got past the 132-run target. Rahul was part of two fifty-plus stands PBKS’ top-order got the job done.
200 innings for Rohit in the IPL
In a special record, Rohit batted for the 200th time in the IPL. He has become the first player in the competition’s history to amass this milestone. Former Indian cricketer and current Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina follows him on the tally with 192 innings. Interestingly, Rohit remains one of the three players to have featured in 200 IPL games alongside MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik.
40th fifty for the Hitman
The senior cricketer registered a superb 52-ball 63, hitting five fours and two sixes. Rohit now has 40 fifties in the IPL. He has joined the likes of David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli in terms of 40-plus fifties in the tourney. The Hitman has also become the fourth batsman to surpass 5,400 runs in the competition (5,431).
Rohit slams these feats against Punjab
The right-handed batsman is now the sixth-highest run-scorer against Punjab in the IPL. He has accumulated a total of 732 runs at an average of 34.85. The T20 stalwart got past the tally for former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (730). Rohit also hit his seventh fifty against Punjab.
Unique records for Rohit
Rohit’s 63 was his first of 22 fifty-plus scores in T20s since the IPL 2017 to result in a defeat. This was only the second occasion where Rohit had a strike rate below 130 after facing 50-plus deliveries in his T20 career.
KL Rahul amongst the top three once again
KL Rahul has been amongst the top three in terms of run-scorers in the tourney since 2018. The Orange Cap holder scored 659, 593, and 670 runs across the last three editions. And now, he joined Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in terms of getting past 200 runs in IPL 2021. Rahul is now the second-highest scorer this season, amassing at an average of 55.25. Meanwhile, the star batsman slammed his third IPL fifty this season.

Rahul has registered his 24th IPL fifty and a fifth against MI. The opening batsman has become the eighth player to surpass 600 runs against the five-time champions. Rahul has also crossed the mark of 250 fours in the competition (252). He has become just the 24th player to achieve this mark. Rahul has now hit four fifties and a century against MI in his last six innings against them. His scores read: 94(60), 71(57)*, 100(64)*, 17(19), 77(51), 60(52)*.
